In flat x-ray detectors a scintillator layer is coupled to a sensor plate. The most common used scintillator layer is made of columnar crystals of CsI-TlI (Caesium Iodide – Thallium Iodide). The CsI-TlI layer converts the x-ray into optical photons which are detected by the sensor array.
The CsI-TlI layer is a hygroscopic material that will dissolve by moisture in the air. This will give a rapid deterioration of the scintillator layer. The resolution of the scintillator decreases in time. This hygroscopic property of CsI makes it necessary to protect it against moisture in the air. The most common way to protect the CsI layer from degradation is by deposition of a coating that will act as a moisture barrier.
